It’s My Birthday….

Photography by Tim Walker

…I’ve decided to take the day off from weddings to evaluate some personal areas that need addressing.  Up until this morning, I dreaded turning 29, a subtle yet dreadful number.  It deserves neither the pomp and circumstance of the quarter century prize: 25, nor the empowered “new twenties” banner of 30.  Oh no! 29 has the distinct position of being the middle child, a role I’m all too familiar with.

Well enough is enough! I decided that instead of evading June 22, 2010 like the plague I’d take it on and come up with a list of 29 things I MUST do before I turn 30, next year.  After all, if I’m going to meet Oprah, I’ve got to have a few things in order right? I won’t inundate you with all 29 to-dos, but I will share ten so you can keep me accountable.  You, being the cosmos, God, universe and general public to whom I entrust my action items so they don’t go ignored or abandoned:

TOP 10 (OF THE 29) THINGS I MUST DO BEFORE I TURN 30, next year:

10- Tell my husband and daughter I love them everyday, regardless of how tumultuous my day, emotional life and self-esteem is going.

9- Reconnect with 29 friends that I’ve lost touch with for whatever reason or other.  Reconnecting does not include Facebook.

8- Ensure that my daughter meet her last surviving great-grand father before it’s too late.

7- I will start drawing again.

6- Make at least one purchase just for me that isn’t based out of necessity or emergency…but solely because I look hot in it.

5- I will give an anonymous gift to two people: One will be someone I know, and the other will be a total stranger.

4- I will forgive myself more often.

3- I will speak French and English to my daughter…and make sure that my mother speaks to her only in our native language.

2- I will tell my husband exactly what I mean, and not expect him to read my mind.

1- Meet the Grande Dame Winfrey, and tell her in as many words as my allotted segment airtime will let me: Just what an inspirational mentor she has been to me.

First and foremost Happy Birthday! I must tell you as an avide reader of your blog and someone who is also in the midst of planning my own wedding…and turning 28 this year…not only your blog but your top 1o list above is awe inspiring! Your words and list of things resound so deeply within me and reflect so many of things that I strive to do but not always achieve. Yes we grow older and our lives get filled with so many “important” yet unimportant things that it is imperative to slow down and enjoy life. Thank you for reminding us once again of the truly important things in life.
Your blog is wonderful and full of wonderful ideas…so thank you.
Happy Birthday again :)

I wouldn’t mind being the recipient of the generous gift. This, of course, is something I have decided to do for you because I just love you so.

Happy birthday, Fri!!!

Happy Belated Birthday Ms Fri (ooops! I meant Mrs Fri). Twenty Nine is a very special year… an excellent time to be reflective because once you turn 30 there should be no looking back. Happy birthday again – keep up the great work on this blog and here’s to wishing you many more.
