Native American Thanksgiving

Hello Monday Muse!

In the spirit of thanksgiving this week, I think it’s only appropriate for Wedding Nouveau to shed some light on how this holiday season of harvest, feasting and family is celebrated worldwide.  If you choose to host your wedding around this holiday, you shouldn’t feel restricted to turkeys and apple pies, or the month of November, for that matter.  When I googled “Thanksgiving Wedding”, a slew of inspiration boards popped up, all of which seemed to be from the western/American perspective.  And that got my mind racing.  How do non-western cultures celebrate Thanksgiving?

For today, we begin our exploration of this age old tradition at home in the U.S, but from a different perspective.  Not that of the colonizers (Pilgrims), but of the colonized: American Indians.  Native American Culture is a robust diaspora of tradition, historical figures, oral history and folk tales.  In doing a little research, I stumbled upon one tale in particular of Cherokee origin, that has to do with “How the Honey Bee got it’s Stinger.”  A cute story, and the source of today’s thanksgiving harvest inspiration board.

Did you know that there are over 20 different versions of Thanksgiving celebrated globally, all with varying customs and traditions?  I’ll be featuring more boards reflecting as many as I can this week.
